Philosophy and Services
Independence, Self-determination, Normalization, Positive Approaches and Everyday Lives are more than just words at Penn-Mar. They are the core philosophies of staff training and the basis for development of all individual plans.
In Maryland, the entire regulatory system is based on the needs, wants, desires and wishes of the individual, opening up pathways to growth and personal fulfillment. These plans are developed by an individual’s team and pave the way for services provided each year. Understanding that needs change, team meetings are held as needed.
In Pennsylvania, services are provided based on the Office of Mental Retardations guiding principles of Positive Approaches and Everyday Lives. The purpose of this philosophy is to support individual growth and development, to enable people to make their own decisions, achieve their personal goals, develop relationships and enjoy life as full, participating members of the community. We teach, advocate and support the basic human rights of each individual. These goals are met while balancing issues of skills level, compatibility and changing needs. This occasionally results in people changing work locations or moving from one home to another. However, no decisions are made without input from – and the utmost consideration given to – everyone who will be affected by the change.
Although terminology may differ in each state, the philosophies are the same. We are committed to promoting independence and allowing people to make their own choices. This right comes with many responsibilities necessary to ensuring a peaceful environment for fellow housemates and co-workers. These rights and responsibilities are outlined in Penn-Mar’s residential agreement and Vocational Service agreement, which are presented before admission to a Penn-Mar program and reviewed on an annual basis.
Health and happiness are two of the cornerstones of quality care. Penn-Mar is fortunate to have a caring, competent and committed nursing staff that is involved with the medical needs of individuals. These nurses have become fierce advocates for our consumers and are one of Penn-Mar’s many strengths. Registered Nurses are an integral part of the Maryland program and they oversee all medical care. The Pennsylvania program utilizes the knowledge and experience of License Practical Nurses to assist with individual’s care. Program Managers are responsible to work with the nursing staff to ensure quality medical care as well as helping each individual live the life they choose. Opportunities to engage in meaningful activities and being active members of the community are crucial to each person’s happiness. The Program Managers monitor these opportunities in accordance with the individual’s plan.
