Posted on October 28, 2025

We’re excited to highlight a “behind-the-scenes” team member whose work supports our mission, but whose face you might not often see. We want to give everyone the opportunity to learn more about our innovative team and the complex work we do.

So, tune in for our monthly Team Member Spotlight, where our team members share in their own words a bit about themselves!

What is your job title?

LISS (Low Intensity Support Services) Coordinator

How long have you been with Penn-Mar?
8 years

How did you get connected with Penn-Mar?
Two of my friends worked at Penn-Mar and they both knew I would love working here.

What was your previous work experience prior to Penn-Mar and how did it prepare you for your current role?
I started my career at The Bon-Ton corporate center in the photo studio within the advertising department. I attended catalog planning meetings, gathered the featured items, and made sure everything was organized for the stylists and photographers, ensuring all instructions were followed. We worked with models, clothing, home goods, and just about everything The Bon-Ton sold. It was such a fun and creative job!

After having my first daughter, I became a stay-at-home mom for a few years, taking on part-time roles at Giant, Chick-fil-A, and as a paraprofessional at an elementary school. Once my kids were in school, I started looking for a full-time position and joined Penn-Mar’s Maryland office as the front desk receptionist, where I worked for three years. During that time, I got to know the LISS team and often helped them with small projects and paperwork. When a position opened up in their department, I was thrilled for the opportunity to officially join the team!

What does your work entail?
I help families complete their paperwork and make sure they submit everything needed for the LISS grant. I often meet families one-on-one, sometimes at libraries or other community spots, to guide them through the process. Once applications are submitted, I review them to confirm eligibility and either purchase the approved items myself (my favorite part!) or send everything to Accounting so invoices can be paid. Our goal is always to help families make the most of their grant funds before the year ends.

What’s an average day like for you?
An average day for me includes answering phone calls, putting together packets, and reviewing submitted information to make sure applicants qualify. Once a packet is complete, I process the file, purchase the requested items, or gather everything needed to send to the accounting department so a check can be issued.

What’s one thing you wish people realized about your job?
We’re helping so many families across Maryland with a small amount of money that makes a huge difference in their lives.

In another life, your career path is . . .
I would have pursued being an x-ray tech.

Why is Penn-Mar’s mission important to you?
Penn-Mar’s mission is important to me because it’s all about giving people the chance to live their best, most independent lives. Everyone deserves to be seen, valued, and supported, and that’s exactly what Penn-Mar does every day. Knowing that the work I do helps families and individuals reach their goals makes me proud to be part of this mission.

What’s one thing you wished the general public knew about people with IDD?
I wish more people knew how much individuals with IDD have to offer. They’re funny, hardworking, and full of personality. Once you take the time to really get to know them, you realize they’re not so different from anyone else, they just want to be included, respected, and given the chance to shine.

What is your favorite quote or mantra?
I’m not great at advice. But can I interest you in a sarcastic comment? Chandler Bing, Friends
