David has found outdoor work he enjoys and a place where he truly belongs. 
Whether he is riding his jet ski on the Eastern Shore or working outdoors, David Lindauer is happiest when he is out in the fresh air. He loved his previous part-time job at a vineyard where he helped cut grapes and bottle wine, but his strong ambition led him to search for a job with more hours.
Employment Coordinator Kayla Stephenson helped research outdoor work opportunities at greenhouses and golf courses.
Their search led them to Hayfields Country Club in Cockeysville, MD, a beautiful course that overlooks spectacular views of Oregon Ridge. Coincidentally, the club is also the site of Penn-Mar’s Annual Fall Golf Classic that raises funds to support people like David with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD).
David secured a two-day-a-week position there and has become a familiar presence on the course, where he can be found driving around in a golf cart ensuring the course is up to par and that members have an enjoyable experience.
“What I like best about my job is being outside, getting to see the regular members, and always being able to meet new people,” said David.
Kayla is not surprised that David is thriving in his job. His outgoing and organized personality makes him a natural fit for the role.
“I see how happy David is when he is working at the club,” she said. “I recently stopped by to check in with him, and I found him standing with some other staff laughing and carrying on. He is definitely part of the team!”
Job coaches like Kayla and natural supports at the workplace ensure that people with IDD are set up for success in their jobs.
David’s natural support at Hayfields, Mr. Nick, formally taught children with IDD before working at the club. So, in addition to Kayla’s regular check-ins, David has the support and guidance of a trusted mentor.
Last year, David was on duty at Penn-Mar’s Annual Golf Classic, which made for an extra special workday surrounded by familiar faces gathered to support the mission of the organization he has called home since 2005.
He will be standing by to welcome the golfers again on Monday, October 12, when Penn-Mar will bring together corporate partners, community leaders, and mission-driven individuals for a memorable day of friendly competition and shared commitment.
The Golf Classic will run from 10:30 am to 7:30 pm with a shotgun start at noon. All proceeds support Penn-Mar Human Services’ mission to help people with IDD live courageously, achieve independence, and thrive in their communities.
