Exhibit at JCC Showcases Work of Talented Penn-Mar Artists

This public display is a visual expression of their immense value and capabilities.

Through my connections at the York JCC (Jewish Community Center) I was fortunate to be able to secure their lobby space for the month of December to display art created by nine budding artists with disabilities who we support at Penn-Mar.

Over the years the Center has been a wonderful resource for Penn-Mar’s Day Program, offering exercise classes and events that provide our people with enriching opportunities for community engagement and healthier lifestyle choices.

I was heartened by the response to the opportunity and how each of our participating artists interpreted the “winter wonderland” theme.  The 11” x 14” paintings included everything from jolly snowmen to bright red cardinals perched in white birch trees, to pinecone details and snowy bucolic landscapes.

The exhibit really gave our artists the opportunity to blossom and show their often-hidden talents. Unfortunately, people with disabilities are not always given enough credit for what they can accomplish. This public display is a visual expression of their immense value and capabilities.

To showcase their achievements, we hosted an Opening Night on December 2 at the JCC where the artists were delighted to share their masterpieces with assembled family, friends and Penn-Mar team members. There was even a toast to their accomplishments with sparkling grape juice!

I would like to give each of our amazing artists a well-deserved shout out:

Shawn Brammer, who plays an active and influential role in the creation of his art alongside me to ensure each piece reflects his unique perspective and creativity.

Cortina Fountain, a remarkable artist who communicated her vibrant inner world to me without the use of words while exploring new techniques and mediums.

Patty Groft, who enjoys participating in group art projects alongside her DSP Tammy Naylor where she can engage with others and learn from and be inspired by the people she meets.

Karen Harman, whose unique work she did supported by DSP Tammy Naylor is filled with vibrant life and whimsical designs reflecting her cheerful outlook on life.

Miriam Klopcic, a passionate self-taught artist who creates stunning landscapes and believes in her own independence.

Lara Kopey, together with her DSP Makenna Hersh, creates works that are both inspiring and deeply personal.

Jon Martin, whose passion for learning new techniques and his hands-on approach to his innovative work are truly inspiring.

Edie Simmons, who approaches each project with patience and precision with his meticulous nature, love of learning and passion for continuous improvement.

Jenna Zarfoss, a dedicated artist who finds endless inspiration online, exploring various styles and techniques that she incorporates into her own designs.

The exhibit at the JCC runs through the end of December, so I encourage you to stop by to view for yourself the accomplished works of these individuals with disabilities who are creatively living their dreams. https://yorkjcc.org/
